Shoe Racks and Fitted Storage in Nairobi

quoted per unit

The most-searched cabinet item in Kenya

Shoe storage is asked about here more than fitted kitchens are, and almost all of what is sold is freestanding, flat-shelved and too shallow.

Angle the shelves

A flat shelf wastes most of its depth: a shoe sits toe-out and the space behind the heel does nothing. Angled shelves, tilted back about fifteen degrees with a small lip, hold the same shoes in noticeably less depth and stop them sliding forward.

The practical result is roughly a third more pairs in the same cabinet, which on a hallway unit is the difference between it working and overflowing within a month.

Depth, and the shoes people actually own

Standard imported shoe cabinets are built around a size that suits a European women’s shoe. A men’s size eleven does not fit, so the door will not close, and the unit gets used for something else within a fortnight.

We build to about 330mm internal depth on angled shelves, which takes essentially any shoe in the house. It is a small change and it is why bespoke is worth it for this item specifically.

Ventilation is not optional

A sealed cupboard full of shoes worn in Nairobi humidity is an unpleasant thing to open. Shoes need airflow to dry.

A perforated or slatted back, a vented plinth, or a deliberate gap at the top of the carcass all work. A solid sealed box with a magnetic catch does not, however good it looks, and this is the single most common complaint about built-in shoe storage.

Where it goes

Entrance halls in most Kenyan homes, because shoes come off at the door. That means the unit is the first thing a visitor sees, so it wants to read as joinery rather than as a shoe cupboard: a bench seat on top, a drawer for keys, hooks above, and a finish matching the rest of the hall.

Under the stairs is the other natural place, and the raking soffit that makes it awkward is exactly what makes a bespoke unit worth more than a bought one.
