Bathroom Vanity Units in Nairobi: Built for a Wet Room

quoted per unit

A bathroom destroys ordinary cabinetry

A vanity lives in the wettest, most humid room in the house, with a basin above it and standing water reaching it regularly. Standard MDF in that environment behaves exactly as you would expect: it wicks moisture through any unsealed edge, swells, and the swelling is permanent.

The failure is always at the same places. The bottom edge of the door, the back of the carcass where it meets the wall, and around the basin cutout. Every one of those is a cut edge that somebody should have sealed and did not.

What we build them from

Moisture-resistant MDF or marine plywood for the carcass, with every cut edge sealed rather than just the visible ones. The edges nobody sees are the ones that fail, because they are the ones left raw.

The plinth is the other detail worth paying for. A vanity sitting directly on a bathroom floor is standing in every mopping and every overflow. A recessed plinth in a waterproof material, or a wall-hung unit with nothing touching the floor at all, removes that entirely and makes cleaning underneath possible.

Wall-hung, and what it needs

Wall-hung vanities look better, clean better and last longer. They also transfer the entire load, cabinet, top, basin and the water in it, into the wall.

That is straightforward on a masonry wall with the right fixings and it is not on a plasterboard partition, where it needs noggins fitted before the boarding goes on. Which means the decision has to be made before the wall is closed up, not when the vanity is delivered.

We ask what the wall is at survey. It is the single question that decides whether a wall-hung unit is possible at all.

Ventilation and the mirror

Doors on a bathroom cabinet trap humid air. A vented plinth or a small gap at the back lets it move, and it makes a real difference to how the unit ages.

If a mirror cabinet is going above, its depth and the basin tap height have to work together. A tap that fouls a mirror door is discovered on installation day and it is designed out at survey.

Other things we do

Send us your kitchen plan

A rough sketch with the wall lengths is enough. We will come back with a running-foot price and a layout suggestion, and we will tell you where spending more genuinely lasts longer and where it does not.
