What is a running foot?

The horizontal length of the run, counting floor and wall units together, so a 3-metre wall with cupboards above and below is about 10 running feet, not 20. Insist on the unit; a quote with a figure and no unit cannot be compared to anything.

How long does a kitchen take?

Six to eight weeks from approved drawings to installation is typical for a fitted kitchen, with worktops following after the units are set and levelled. We survey and template on site after plastering rather than working from the drawings, and we confirm your dates in writing once the design is signed off.

MDF, melamine or plywood?

Marine plywood under the sink without argument, melamine-faced board for the rest of the carcass, MDF for sprayed and shaker fronts. That combination puts the money where the failures actually happen. The materials page sets out why in full.

Do you make wardrobes as well as kitchens?

Why fitted joinery goes wrong in Nairobi

Six things that turn a good-looking kitchen into a disappointing one, and what we do about each.

Cut from the drawing, not the wall

Nairobi walls are rarely square: in the older Karen and Lavington stone houses, thirty millimetres out across a run is normal. Carcasses cut from an architect's drawing have to be forced into place, and forcing is why the doors never line up a year later. We template after plastering.

MDF with an unsealed edge under the sink

MDF is an excellent material and water destroys an unsealed edge permanently. That is not a property of MDF, it is a property of MDF nobody sealed. We seal every cut edge and specify marine plywood for the sink run regardless of budget.

Hinges chosen last

Hardware is rated in cycles and it is invisible on installation day. Cheap hinges on a kitchen opened three times a day begin to sag inside two years, and replacing them once fitted is tedious. Spend here rather than on the door finish.

Worktops templated too early

A worktop measured before the units are set and levelled will not sit right, and stone is not adjustable. Templating happens after installation, which means a return visit. Anyone offering to template beforehand is guessing.

The delivery route was never measured

A Westlands service lift caps panels at about two and a half metres; a Highridge stairwell is tighter still; a Runda island is bigger than the door. Sectioning planned in the workshop is invisible. Sectioning decided on the landing is not.

The deposit disappears

Money taken up front, workshop goes quiet, nobody answers. We work to staged payments against milestones (deposit on drawings approved, balance on delivery and installation) with an M-Pesa receipt at every stage.
