We check before cutting. Most Westlands service lifts take about two and a half metres, which means longer panels are built in sections and joined on site. That is a design decision, not a compromise, but it has to be made in the workshop rather than discovered in the lobby.

There is nowhere for the extractor to vent. What now?

Common in newer Westlands blocks. Either a duct route is agreed with the building, which usually needs management approval, or you fit a recirculating extractor with carbon filters. We resolve it before carcasses are set, because the housing differs.

Westlands is apartment joinery, and the constraints are almost entirely about access and scale rather than about design. The room is small, the lift is smaller, and somebody else owns the corridor.

The lift decides the panel

Before we cut anything for a Westlands block we measure the service lift, car dimensions and door opening. Roughly two and a half metres is typical, and that sets the maximum panel we can deliver in one piece.

Longer runs are built in sections with the joint placed where it will be least visible, usually under a worktop join or behind a tall bank. Planned in the workshop that is invisible. Discovered at delivery it means cutting a finished panel in a lobby, which never looks right.

Small kitchens reward planning

At 10 to 14 running feet, every decision counts. A 600mm appliance gap is not 600mm once the door and its hinge are allowed for. A bin pull-out that seemed generous swallows a full base unit. Corner space is either designed for with a proper mechanism or it is dead.

We would rather spend an extra hour on the layout than deliver a kitchen where the fridge door fouls the island.

Extraction

Newer Westlands blocks frequently hand over a bare kitchen shell with no duct provision at all. There are two honest answers: agree a duct route with building management, or fit a recirculating extractor with carbon filters and accept that it is less effective.

What we will not do is design a housing for a ducted hood that has nowhere to vent, which is how a kitchen ends up with an extractor blowing back into the room.
