How small a kitchen can you fit properly?

Smaller than most people think, if it is planned rather than scaled down. Under about 10 running feet the decisions get ruthless: one appliance gap, a full-height utility bank, and corner space either properly mechanised or written off. What does not work is a large kitchen's layout shrunk to fit.

Can panels get up a Highridge stairwell?

We measure the turn before cutting. A narrow stair with a half-landing sets a hard maximum on panel length, and it is usually tighter than the doorway. Sectioning is planned in the workshop where the joint can be placed sensibly.

Small kitchens are planned, not shrunk

A 10-foot kitchen is not a 20-foot kitchen made smaller. It is a different design problem, and the mistake we most often undo is a large kitchen’s layout compressed until nothing works.

At this scale each decision forecloses another. A 600mm appliance gap (which is not 600mm once the door and hinge are allowed for) often decides where the sink can go, which decides where the run ends. A full-height utility bank holding the washing machine and the cleaning equipment usually earns its metre of wall many times over.

Corner space is either given a proper mechanism or accepted as lost. Pretending it is usable without one is how a small kitchen ends up with an inaccessible void.

Subdivided houses

Several Parklands houses have been divided into flats, which means one generous original kitchen becoming three or four small ones. Each needs its own compact specification rather than a share of the original plan, and services frequently run in unexpected places as a result of the conversion.
