Fitted Wardrobe Prices in Kenya: Built-In, Not Freestanding

First, be sure what you are pricing

If you have been searching wardrobe prices in Kenya, most of what you will have found is furniture: freestanding units, flat-pack, and plastic wardrobes at a few thousand shillings.

This page is about built-in joinery: made for one wall, fitted to it, floor to ceiling, worked around the skirting and the corner that is not square. It costs several times what a freestanding unit costs and it is a genuinely different thing.

Both are reasonable purchases. They are just not alternatives, and comparing their prices tells you nothing.

How it is priced

Per running foot of frontage, the same unit as a fitted kitchen, because Kenyan workshops price both the same way. A 3-metre wall of wardrobe is about 10 running feet.

What drives the cost

The internals, more than the doors. A run with rail and shelf is at the bottom of the range. The same frontage with drawer banks, pull-out shoe racks, trouser rails and internal lighting is at the top. Most of the money in a good wardrobe is behind the doors.

Sliding versus hinged. Sliding gear costs more than hinges, and the gap between good and poor track is wide. A cheap sliding system is the component most likely to annoy you daily.

Carcass material. As with kitchens: blockboard at the bottom, marine plywood above it. A bedroom is a drier environment than under a kitchen sink, so the case for the upgrade is weaker here, and we will say so rather than upsell it.

Where a fitted wardrobe genuinely earns its price

In awkward space. Under a staircase, into eaves, around a chimney breast, into a corner that is out of square. Freestanding furniture cannot use those spaces at all, and in a compact Nairobi apartment they are frequently the only storage left in the room.

If your bedroom is a plain rectangle with a full free wall, a good freestanding wardrobe is a perfectly sensible choice and we will tell you so.
